Where should the desk be?

The first and most important question is of course the place of the desk. A few tips in advance:

  • You should not sit with your back to the window. Otherwise annoying reflections on the screen are inevitable.

  • Ideally, the screen is at right angles to the window.

  • If you are sitting right in front of the window, you need blackout options so that you are not dazzled during the day.
Ideally, the workplace should not be visible from the bed – more on that in the next paragraph.

Of course, in the end it is always decisive where there is still space at all. Feel free to take a look around the room and look out for unused niches, bay windows or corners. A small or narrow desk can often be ideally accommodated here.

Our tip:
It can also be worth replacing an existing large cupboard. Instead, opt for a model half the size and use the space that has been freed up for your desk. You can compensate for the lost storage space e.g. B. with boxes under the bed.

5 ideas to hide the workplace in the bedroom

A clear visual separation of the two areas is recommended so that you don't nod off at your desk or ponder work thoughts in bed. With the following 5 ideas, the workplace in the bedroom can be discreetly hidden.

1. Shelf as a room divider

A proven means of dividing the room and creating additional storage space: the shelf placed in the middle of the room. If you want to promote a calm, orderly spatial impression, choose a closed variant with many small doors or place storage boxes in the compartments. If, on the other hand, the room seems too crowded for you, it is best to use an open shelf – or a half-height piece of furniture.

2. Folding screen

The folding screen is practically the "professional" among the room dividers, because it serves exactly this one purpose. But it doesn't take up much space - and can also be moved flexibly. This allows you to separate the work area at night in order to find inner peace. During the day you simply move it to the side and thus create additional space. As an exciting alternative, you can also use standing mirrors to structure the room.

3. Curtains

Our insider tip for the workplace in the bedroom: curtains. These simply fit perfectly into the rest room and ensure a soft, flowing look. When closed, a cozy canopy bed atmosphere is created and during the day you can be pushed aside properly. It is best to choose translucent, light-colored fabrics that make the room appear light and airy.

4. Lightweight wall

If you don't shy away from the effort, then a lightweight wall that was installed later could also be a good option. However, this variant is particularly suitable for – originally – large bedrooms. However, you do not necessarily have to completely separate the room with the wall: With a half-height wall that covers about a third of the room width, e.g. B. a perfect work niche to integrate the study in the bedroom.

5. Use niches and corners

Of course, it is even better to use existing niches: let your gaze wander through the room and look for unused corners and projections. It often doesn't take a lot of space to discreetly accommodate a narrow desk. It may even be worthwhile having a carpenter make a suitable piece of furniture to measure.

Or just the opposite - emphasize the workplace!

Breaking supposed basic rules, this is how attractive design is created. Therefore: simply draw attention to your workplace! With an eye-catching desk lamp, an exclusive glass desk or a colorful office chair, the boring work niche becomes an attractive design statement.

Decoration: Inspirational and calming at the same time

The typical furnishing style in the office usually differs significantly from the bedroom decoration. At work we prefer order and clarity, in the bedroom it should be comfortable and homely. If you integrate the study in the bedroom, you have to find a good compromise between the two. It is best to rely on functional furniture that also radiates something playful and soft - for example:

  • a colourful, upholstered desk chair

  • Braided raffia storage baskets

  • inspirational art that you personally like

One or two pretty green plants are almost a must-have. In this way, you can give your working and sleeping areas a pleasant, fresh touch.

Bedroom and study in one room - this is how you save space!

Combining a bedroom and study in one room can be quite a challenge. Because space is usually scarce here. Fortunately, there are numerous clever ideas on how to get the most out of small spaces - keyword "Tiny Houses". Get creative and try e.g. B. the following room solutions:

  • Folding desk: After work, simply fold away the tabletop - and the room looks much larger. The same principle applies to an extendable desk, where you can e.g. B. the keyboard pad can "disappear" inconspicuously.

  • Storage bed: Only dust and ghosts live under your bed? Then it's high time not to let this space go unused any longer. With suitable, tightly closing boxes, you can conjure up new storage space in no time. Or you can opt for a bed with built-in drawers.

  • Narrow tabletop: If you don't need a desktop PC for work, you can often get by with a relatively narrow desk. A tabletop with a depth of 40 cm is sufficient e.g. B. good for a standard notebook. Of course, it also depends on how much work has to be done on the table. For a 40-hour week as a freelancer, a more spacious workplace might be advisable.

  • Mobile container: Folders, documents and other work utensils can be neatly stowed away with this. After the work is done, the container simply disappears under the desktop and does not take up valuable space.

  • Wall shelf: The golden rule for small areas is: go vertical! Use the height of the room, for example by attaching shelves above the desk.

Combine bedroom and study according to Feng Shui?

Do you value harmonious furnishings that allow energies to flow? Then it is best to orientate yourself on the principles of the Asian harmony theory Feng Shui.

First of all: Combining the bedroom and study is unfortunately not ideal from a Feng Shui point of view. Because from the point of view of this teaching, the bedroom is a "Yin area" in which rest, relaxation and passivity are in the foreground. The study is the complete opposite: Yang, which stands for activity, dominates here.

But don't worry: If you have no choice but to integrate the study in the bedroom, you can balance these opposites with a few targeted measures:

Keep things in order

Who doesn't know it: In no time at all, clothes, documents and work materials are scattered all over the room. However, the teachings of Feng Shui recommend an orderly, quiet environment for working and resting. So make sure you have enough storage space so that all the utensils have their place. Important: It must be a closed container, cupboard, shelf, etc.

Turn off electronics

For a peaceful sleep, you should ban electronics from the bedroom as much as possible. If you integrate the study in the bedroom, you probably cannot avoid a laptop and PC. So make sure to shut everything down after work and switch off multiple sockets completely.

Place the desk correctly

A desk position where you have a solid wall behind you is ideal. Because we instinctively feel protected and safe - and can devote our entire concentration to the work tasks.

Demarcate areas

Try to divide the room into two clear areas: one for "Yin" (rest, relaxation) and one for "Yang" (activity and focus). You can find ideas on how such a visual differentiation can succeed in the first part of the article.

Natural materials

Linen, wicker and wood are particularly suitable for creating a cozy atmosphere in the bedroom. So it is best to use these materials in the work area as well. Metal, on the other hand, should be avoided.

Tips for work-life balance [Integrating a study in the bedroom]

Anyone who has worked from home for a long time knows the problem: at some point, work and free time seem to blur. This is all the more true if you integrate the study in the bedroom: Here it is particularly important to ensure a good work-life balance!

It is best to consciously schedule fixed working hours. As with an off-site office, sit down at your desk at a specific time and work for a predetermined amount of time. This makes it easier for you to switch to "after work mode".

It is also advisable to change clothes. Sitting down at your desk in your pajamas may make sense when the bed is only two meters away, but this is not conducive to concentrated work.

And last but not least: Don't spend your entire day in the bedroom-study. After the end of the day, you should find at least a few hours to spend in the living room, with friends, or outdoors.

How to: integrate a study in the bedroom

A separate room for each area of life – that would of course be ideal. In reality, sometimes you have to improvise. With a bit of creativity, the study can be integrated into the bedroom and a small but fine home office is created in your bedroom.
